About the artist: Ukrainian painter.
Grigory Stepanovich Smolsky was born on December 2, 1893 in the village of Pidgirki in the Carpathian region (now Ivano-Frankivsk region).
He received his first drawing and painting skills at the Stanislav gymnasium, where he studied until 1914. The First World War interrupted his studies. Gregory was first arrested, and then forcibly sent to the Austrian army.
He returned home only in 1918.
They managed to continue their studies only in 1921 at the Free Academy of Arts in Lviv.
From 1923 to 1930 he studied at the art school of A. Novakovsky. Together with other students of the great artist, he took part in art exhibitions organized by the school. So, in 1926, after the next exhibition, several of Smolsky's works were purchased by the Soviet consulate in Lvov and in 1927 were exhibited in Kharkov at the first All-Ukrainian exhibition "10 Years of October".
Since August 1934, for a year, the artist has been improving his skills at the Paris Academy of Cola rossi.
In May 1937, G.S. Smolsky acts as an organizer and as a participant in the Exhibition of Painting and Graphics of Lviv Artists, held in Lviv at the Museum of the T.G. Shevchenko Scientific Society.
In August 1944, the artist was invited to work at the Lviv School of Industrial Art (now Lviv State College of Decorative and Applied Arts named after I. Trush).
Member of the Union of Artists of the USSR.
He worked in the field of easel painting. Author of thematic paintings, landscapes of his native land, portraits and still lifes.
Participant of numerous republican, all-Union and foreign art exhibitions.
Personal exhibitions of the painter were held in 1957, 1958, 1962, 1967, 1969, 1982 in Lvov and Kiev.
In 1978, in the halls of the Lviv branch of the Union of Artists of the Ukrainian SSR, a personal exhibition was held dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the artist.
The works of Grigory Stepanovich Smolsky are presented in the National Art Museum of Ukraine, in the Lviv National Museum named after A. Sheptytsky, in numerous museums. gallery and private collections.
