The father of the future artist was killed in 1919 during a pogrom, his mother soon died, and a nine-year-old boy ended up in a Kiev orphanage. Paying attention to his ability to draw, the heads of the orphanage sent Shai Bronstein to study at the Kiev Art College. After graduating from technical school, the artist goes to Leningrad and enters the Academy of Arts, where he has been studying with K.S. Petrov-Vodkin for about a year, but leaves his studies due to illness. In the early 30s, Sh. Bronstein moved to Moscow, collaborated with various publishers from 1935 to 1941, without stopping practical work, he studied at the Moscow State Institute of Advanced Studies with A. N. Usachev and G. V. Fedorov. In those same years, he was engaged in a lot of woodcuts, linocuts and lithographs, and visited the studio organized by the City Committee of Graphics under the guidance of V. A. Favorsky. Since the beginning of the war, he has been working on camouflage of military facilities, in 1942 he evacuated to Tashkent, where he leads a team to design various objects, and also makes a lot of drawings. After the end of the war he returned to Moscow. Since the mid-1950s, the artist's graphics have been dominated by printmaking.
