About the artist: Ukrainian painter. One of the founders of the Transcarpathian school of painting. People's Artist of Ukraine.
Ernest Rudolfovich Kontratovich was born on May 17, 1912 in the village of Kalna Roztoka (now the territory of Slovakia) in the family of a teacher of a public school.
From 1928 to 1932 he studied at the Uzhgorod teacher's seminary. At the same time he attended the Public Art School-Studio, founded by A. Erdeli and Y. Bokshay in Uzhgorod. After graduation, he took part in city art exhibitions.
Since 1934, Kontratovich E.R. - Member of the Association of Fine Art of Subcarpathian Rus.
After the accession of Transcarpathia to the USSR, the artist lived and worked in Uzhgorod.
He created his own direction of expressionism, in which he reflected the themes of nature, folklore and folk life of Transcarpathia.
Since 1946 - a member of the Transcarpathian organization of the Union of Artists of the Ukrainian SSR.
Since that time, a participant in republican, all-Union and foreign art exhibitions.
Personal exhibitions of the artist were held in Kiev (1974, 1975, 1976 and 2001), in Pryashev (Slovakia, 1974) and in Uzhgorod (1968, 1997, 2002 and 2007).
Kontratovich E.R. took part in the creation of the Transcarpathian art gallery, taught at the Uzhgorod art-industrial school.
Since 1981 - "Honored Artist of the USSR".
In 1991, awarded the honorary title - "People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR".
He was awarded the Order of Yaroslav the Wise.
The artist's works are presented in museum, gallery and private collections in Ukraine, Slovakia, Russia.
