About the artist: July 7, 1850 (Zhukovka village, Kaluga province) - 1923

Painter, graphic artist

From a merchant family. He studied at the Moscow Commercial School. In 1868 he entered the Imperial Academy of Arts, studied first as a volunteer, from 1870 as a permanent student. In 1871 he was awarded two small and two large silver medals for drawings and sketches, in 1874 - a small gold medal for the Samaritan's Mercy program. In 1877 he competed for a large gold medal with the painting "Marriage at Canna of Galilee", but without success. In the same year he graduated from the Academy with the title of class artist of the 1st degree. In 1890 he was awarded the title of academician for his paintings The Godunov Family and Great Saturday Morning.

Lived in Petersburg (?). He worked as a portrait painter, genre painter, historical painter. In the 1880s, he worked on orders from Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich, executed a number of historical paintings on themes from the period of the reign of Ivan the Terrible. Created sketches for 24 mosaics in the Church of the Resurrection of Christ (Savior on Spilled Blood).

Exhibited works at academic exhibitions (since 1870).

The works are in a number of museum collections, including the State Museum-Monument "St. Isaac's Cathedral".
