About the artist: Ivan Marchuk was born on May 12, 1936 in the village of Moskalivtsi (Bilozirka commune, Kremenets county, Volyn voivodeship, Republic of Poland; now the village of Lanovetska community, Kremenets district, Ternopil region) in the family of a weaver known throughout the district.
After finishing the seven-year school, he entered the Lviv School of Applied Arts named after Ivan Trush to the department of decorative painting, where he studied during 1951-1956 (teachers Karlo Zvirynskyi, Oleksa Shatkivskyi, N. Sukachova). After serving in the army, he continued his studies at the ceramics department of the Lviv Institute of Applied Arts, which he graduated in 1965 (teachers Roman Selskyi, Danylo Dovboshynskyi).
In 1965-1968 he worked at the Institute of Superhard Materials of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, in 1968-1984 at the Kyiv Combine of Monumental and Decorative Arts.
Since 1984 — at creative work.
In 1989-2001 he lived in Australia, Canada and the USA. In 1990, Marchuk visited Ukraine and his first official exhibition took place in Kyiv — at the State Art Museum of Ukrainian Fine Arts (now the National Art Museum of Ukraine).
