About the artist: He studied at the Academy of Arts (1914–1918), then at the Petrograd Free Art Workshops (1919–1923) with K.S. Petrova-Vodkina, D.N. Kurdova, A.A. Rylova. He was influenced by K.S. Petrova-Vodkin, with whom he traveled to Samarkand (1921). He was a member of the association "Circle of Artists", aesthetically close to the OST, and the association "October". He worked as a theater artist and book graphic artist, illustrated children's publications. For illustrations to the "History of a city" M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin (1935) received the Grand Prix in Paris. In the 1940s Samokhvalov worked a lot as a theater artist. He designed a number of productions: “Dowry” (1935) and “Hot Heart” (1943) A.N. Ostrovsky, “Glass of Water” by E. Scribe (1943) and others. The author of the autobiographical book "My Creative Way" and the story "During the Restless Sun." The artist's works are stored in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum and other museums and private collections.
