About the artists: He acquired his first painting skills at the school of military topographers. In 1863 he studied at the drawing school for the encouragement of arts in St. Petersburg, in 1864-1871. - at the Academy of Arts. Under the impression of a trip along the Volga, Repin painted the painting "Barge Haulers on the Volga" (1870-1873), which immediately brought him fame. In 1873-1876. with funds from the Academy, he continued to hone his talent in Italy and France. In the late 70s - 80s. XIX century. a painter reaching the pinnacle of skill. Returning to Russia, he first settled in his native Chuguev, then in Moscow, and in 1882 he moved to St. Petersburg.
In 1878 Repin joined the Itinerant group. The main theme of his work in these years is politics with the life of the Russian countryside ("Seeing off a new recruit", 1879; "Religious procession in the Kursk province", 1880-1883). Later he turns to the topic of revolutionary struggle ("Refusal of Confession", 1879-1885; "The Arrest of a Propagandist", 1880-1892; "They Did Not Expect", 1884-1888). At the same time, Repin manifests himself as a brilliant portrait painter: he painted portraits of V.V. Stasov (1873), M.P. Mussorgsky, N.I. Pirogov (both 1881), L.N. Tolstoy (1887. ). In addition, he creates his best historical canvases: "Princess Sophia" (1879), "Ivan the Terrible and his son Ivan" (1885), "The Zaporozhians write a letter to the Turkish sultan" (1878-1891).In the 90s. Repin temporarily broke with the Wanderers, but by the end of the 19th century. returned to its previous positions. In 1893 he was elected a full member of the Academy of Arts, in 1894-1907. taught there, and in 1898-1899 held the post of rector. Among his students are the famous painters I.E. Grabar and B.M. Kustodiev. Since 1899, Ilya Efimovich lived on his Penaty estate in Kuokkala, as a result of which in 1917 he found himself abroad - in Finland. Despite invitations to return to his homeland, Repin, who did not approve of the policies of the Soviet regime, never returned to the USSR, while donating his paintings to Russia (most of them are kept in the Tretyakov Gallery).
